The Accra Circuit Court has ordered the remand of three university students into police custody following their alleged involvement in a series of coordinated smartphone thefts. According to a Graphic Online report the individuals were apprehended after being linked to the snatching of high end mobile devices within the Accra metropolitan area. The suspects are reported to be students of recognized tertiary institutions who allegedly targeted unsuspecting victims to steal valuable electronic devices.

During the court proceedings the prosecution detailed how the suspects allegedly operated as a syndicate to monitor and rob individuals of their smartphones. A GhanaWeb report states that the prosecution requested the suspects remain in custody to prevent potential interference with ongoing police investigations. The court heard that the police are still working to recover several of the missing devices mentioned in the charge sheet.

The presiding judge noted the gravity of the allegations and the need for the Ghana Police Service to complete their inquiries before bail could be considered. As reported by the Ghana News Agency the court has scheduled a follow up hearing to allow the defense counsel to respond to the charges and for the prosecution to present further evidence. The identities of the three students are being withheld by some outlets pending more formal filings but they are officially charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and stealing.

The defense team argued for bail by noting that the suspects are students with no prior criminal records and would not flee the jurisdiction. However the court upheld the prosecution request for remand based on the complexity of the alleged smartphone theft ring. The Ghana Police Service has issued a statement through its regional communications office urging members of the public who may have been victims of similar snatching incidents in the area to come forward for identification exercises.
