An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a businessman into police custody following accusations that he defrauded a private investor of several million Ghana Cedis. The prosecution stated that the accused person represented himself as an individual with high level connections capable of facilitating government tender wins. The court heard that the suspect convinced the complainant to part with funds to secure these purported opportunities.

According to court documents presented by the prosecution the complainant handed over approximately two million Ghana Cedis in multiple installments. These payments were allegedly intended to cover administrative fees and processing costs associated with the state contracts. However the prosecution alleges that no such contracts existed and that the accused moved the funds into personal accounts.

The defense counsel requested bail for the accused arguing that their client had a permanent place of residence and would not pose a flight risk. The legal team also reminded the court that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent tribunal. They stated that the businessman was prepared to cooperate fully with the investigation and would appear for every scheduled hearing.

The presiding judge declined the bail application at this stage of the proceedings. The court cited the gravity of the amount involved and the ongoing nature of the police investigation as primary reasons for the remand decision. The suspect is expected to remain in custody while the police finalize their witness statements and financial audits related to the transactions.

The case has been adjourned until next month when the prosecution is expected to provide more detailed evidence. Authorities have cautioned the public about individuals who claim to provide shortcuts to state procurement processes. This latest development follows a series of recent crackdowns on financial irregularities within the capital city.
